Featured Academic Resource: The Making of England
What if the past could be understood not only through what each source tells us, but through the connections between many sources and many perspectives?
A coin may reveal authority and economy. A charter may reveal institutions and power. Literature may reveal ideas and cultural memory. Archaeology may reveal the physical traces of how people lived. Historians and other scholars bring these different forms of evidence together to develop interpretations of the past. What becomes possible when we take this a step further — bringing different sources, scholarly perspectives and interpretations into conversation to reveal connections that may remain difficult to see within any one source or perspective?
Connected understanding means seeing the past as a network of relationships rather than as isolated facts. By bringing together evidence, places, people, events, objects and different scholarly perspectives, we can begin to see how they relate to one another — and where the evidence remains uncertain or open to interpretation.
Digital Humanities gives us new ways to make these connections visible, explore them at greater scale, and translate complex historical understanding into forms that more people can engage with.
Digital Humanities brings together humanistic knowledge, digital methods and new forms of inquiry and communication. It allows us to work across sources, disciplines and media — using technology to find, organise and connect evidence, while human interpretation remains central to understanding what that evidence means.
At WeaversNest.org, we explore this continuum from discovery and analysis to visualisation, storytelling, education and public engagement.
WeaversNest.org is a Digital Humanities initiative exploring how technology can help us discover, connect and communicate the past. We bring together historical sources, scholarly perspectives and digital methods to explore relationships between people, places, events, objects and ideas — and translate that understanding into academic resources, writing, visual scholarship, documentaries and other forms of digital storytelling.
Our aim is simple: to help more people discover and understand the past, while keeping the evidence, context and richness of historical knowledge at the heart of the experience.
WeaversNest.org develops digital humanities resources designed to support teaching, learning and deeper exploration of the past. These may bring together historical scholarship, sources, maps, timelines, visual materials and other digital approaches to make complex subjects easier to explore and understand.
